From humble beginnings…
We are about to set off on our American adventure following in the footsteps of the intrepid explorer Captain James Cook. He set sail out of Whitby in 1778 on sadly his last voyage to the Hawaiian islands.
Living not far from Whitby we often visit the seaside town, have fish and chips, run on the beach and sit overlooking the harbour along with the statue of Captain Cook with compass points in hand. I often wondered what drove a man like Cook to seek out such seemingly impossible adventures…was he incredibly brave or incredibly stupid…A question I asked myself.
For the first time on a trip like this we will be accompanied by our 21/2 year old daughter Sarah and we intend to document our journey in order to show how rewarding and inspirational it is to travel with your kids…or not! It is in itself a journey of discovery.
As part of my bucket list trip we will be visiting New York, Hawaii and California and will be away for the best part of a month. along with the usual planning and preparation that goes into a trip like this we have had a few extra things to think about as well…
How will Sarah cope with the temperature differences, the long flights, extra passports visas and baggage. We also have to think about car seats, nap times, potties, food, clothing, pushchair etc.
In order to make the Heathrow airport transition a bit smoother we have paid for a lounge pass that has a childrens play area so we will let you know how that goes and if we got value for money.
All of our hotels and car hire in New York and Hawaii have been booked already which is something we would not normally do preferring to wing it but we did’nt want to leave anything to chance.
We are going to be restricted on checked in baggage on our inter-island Hawaii flights so we decided to try and pack light…So far the laws of physics are working against us on this one and it will be interesting to see how it ends up. Up to now we have three carry ons and one check in bag between us, watch this space…
New York, New York
So, three days to go, guide books at the ready, cameras primed, visas done, two extremely excited people and one oblivious small person…next stop New York..
